Stories for Business has been taking thousands of portraits since 2008. The human face is so intriguing – with just a tilt of the head or a different smile, we can create various unique outcomes! 90% of the people we photograph are not models – so naturally, they feel anxious being in front of the camera. After observing thousands of faces as a portrait photographer, we realize there are some common mistakes people make when taking portraits.

Everyone wants to look natural in photos, but they aren’t sure how to get there. There is a balance between how the photographer makes you feel, and what is also within your control.

So if you are looking to take some headshots soon, here are some things you shouldn’t do:

  1. Holding your breath – We see this happening frequently. You’re trying so hard to “look right” that you forget to breathe… and that tension shows up in your face. As you smile, exhale and you’ll instantly look more at ease.

2. Freezing like a statue – Your headshot isn’t a passport photo! You do not need to lock every joint in place. A little movement, a natural tilt of the head, a shift in weight—it brings life to your image. Practice in front of the mirror before a photo session, and explore various angles!

3. Bad posture – Slouching or stiff shoulders can make you look unsure. Instead, push your chest forward slightly and keep your shoulders back. Taking a deep breath and slowly exhaling helps you feel grounded and more aware of your body. Keeping a good posture makes you look confident!

4. Not smiling with your eyes – A real smile travels all the way up! I know that some of you might think, “My Asian eyes will disappear if I have too big of a smile!” Personally, we think genuine smiles bring a sparkle that people love to connect with. Think of something that brings you joy, or someone who makes you laugh.

5. Worrying too much about how you look – We understand – We all have our “bad angles” or little insecurities. But focusing too much on those things pulls you out of the moment. Instead, think about what your photo is for—connection, credibility, and confidence. That shift in mindset changes everything.

6. Wearing something that doesn’t feel like “you” – Just because it looks “professional” doesn’t mean it fits your style. The best photos happen when you feel like your most authentic self—whether that means a blazer, a batik shirt, or a flowy dress you love. You be you!

Your headshot should feel like you – approachable, confident, and real. This is what we hope to capture. Your true essence.

If you’ve been putting off updating your headshot because you feel awkward in front of the camera, we’d love to help. We’ll guide you through every step so it feels fun, relaxed, and true to who you are.
