A lot of people have commented that they did not expect the preparation of the photo or video shoots for headshots, personal branding portraits or family portraits to be so tedious. Looking at the outcome of the photos and videos we have done, it may give the impression that it’s so easy and effortless. However, there are actually a lot of things to consider in order to have a smooth process during the photo sessions. Here are some critical mistakes to avoid whilst preparing for a photo or video shoot, as well as some tips on how to improve them.

Wrong sized outfit / wrong outfit

One of the most important aspects of a great photo session is the choice of outfit. Ensuring your outfit is the right fit for you is more important than you think. Prior to the photoshoot, do take some time to put on the clothes and move around in them to find out if they are suitable for the photos or videos that you’re going to take. For example, if the photo or video requires you to be seated in a skirt, make sure you wear something long enough to be comfortable in. Or you can opt for long trousers, which you can easily strike any poses in.

Sometimes the outfit may clash with the color of the background therefore it is wise to bring a few outfit options, especially if you’re not sure what works best. Always opt for an outfit that you feel confident in, because your confidence will show in the photos or videos. Choose something that reflects your personal style and that you feel confident in.

Being late

Being punctual is so important in everything that we do. Plan ahead and include possible delays like unexpected traffic, weather changes and parking to avoid being late. Do your best to arrive at the location at least 30 minutes prior to the agreed time, so that you can be calm and ready for the session, especially when you need hair and make up done at the shoot location. Arriving late may cause further delays in the schedule, and like a ripple effect, everything else will be delayed as well. If you are going to be late, it’s good to keep communications high and inform the photo or video team as soon as you can in order to help manage expectations.

Not doing research on location

Certain locations may have strict policies against a photo or video session without an approval from the management office. If you are able to, visit the location to scout the surroundings. This helps you to identify the best spots and to ensure a smoother experience on the day of the shoot. By doing this, you can also look for a back up location in case of unexpected weather changes on the day itself.

Filling up the studio questionnaire that we provide will greatly help our team to anticipate and be prepared to ensure the final product meets your expectations. Do give us as much information as possible so that our team can do their best on the day itself as well as during the post-production process. This helps to save precious time and to avoid amendments back and forth.

Wrong timing

Since we’re on the topic of outdoor locations, let’s avoid scheduling a photo or video shoot at midday. The harsh sun can cause unflattering shadows and most likely you can’t even keep your eyes open for the camera. The golden hours – sunrise or sunset will be best for an outdoor shoot. The light is softer and more natural, it can definitely enhance the outcome of the shoot significantly. The temperature during golden hours is cooler as well, making it more comfortable for you and the creative team.

Not bringing the right shoes

Do consider the terrain of the shoot locations. The right footwear will help you perform your best during the session. If the photo shoot is in a garden or uneven terrain, you can consider wearing footwear that is more practical. If you insist on wearing heels for an outdoor location, please bring multiple options that you can change into if the heels are not working out great for your feet. We understand that you would want to look good in front of the camera but the ability to move comfortably during the shoot should be your utmost priority.

Photo and video shoots can be exciting, but they also come with their fair share of challenges. A successful session is a result of careful planning and thoughtful preparation. By avoiding these mistakes, you will be able to have a great experience and the photos and videos are more likely to turn out better. Remember, comfort and confidence go hand in hand. We hope that these tips prepare you better for your next photo or video session. Contact us to schedule your photo session this month!
